At your fall district meetings, a Joanne Breckenridge Scholar should be selected to represent your district at the Capitol for the Joanne Breckenridge Scholar Day tentatively set for March 12, 2013 in conjunction with the MoFRW Legislative Day. The scholar must be a high school junior or senior. Only one (1) scholar per district may be chosen. You may select an alternate but only one (1) girl will be honored as the Breckenridge Scholar. It is highly recommended that your district include the alternate in the MoFRW Legislative Day activities.
Each club in your district will be asked to nominate a young lady for the honor by writing a short essay about their selection. At your fall district meeting you will select the girl to be honored. Some districts vote on their choice as a group and some use a committee. That is up to the District President. The eight (8) girls will then come together in Jefferson City. They will be treated to a day at the Capitol to see how Missouri government works as well as touring our government buildings and meeting with their Senator and Representative. All of their expenses will be covered for the day. Transportation to and from Jefferson City is the responsibility of the district and/or the recipient.
MoFRW Past President Joanne Breckenridge was dedicated to involving young women in government. She started this program 16 years ago as a way to introduce them to our State government. The MoFRW continues to honor her by holding Joanne Breckenridge Scholar Day.
Following the selection of your honoree, you need to complete the registration form for the scholar and send it along with a photo to Sharon Barnes. Please do not use a professional photographer’s photo unless you have a release form as they cannot be reprinted because of copyright law. Each young lady’s short essay and photo will appear in a booklet they will receive in Jefferson City.
Please mail your district nomination form to: Sharon Barnes, 6151 Columbia Avenue, Saint Louis, MO 63139-2741 or email to shronbarnes@yahoo.com. Deadline for submission is December 1, 2012. Please be prompt with your submissions. A letter of congratulations and additional information will be sent to the recipients in early January.
Thank you for your help in selecting a scholar from your district and making it possible to achieve MoFRW’s goal of educating and inspiring young women to become future leaders.
